College Is It Worth It Essay - 689 Words

COLLEGE: IS IT WORTH IT 1 College: Is it Worth it? Kristen Nadeau College Writing Professor Kessler January 29, 2012 College 2 College: Is it worth it? There are many options and paths someone can take in choosing to go to college or not but a question to ask is, is it worth it? If the decision is made to go to college then one of the first things to decide on is an area of study and then looking into where that topic of study is available, which can be a big undertaking. Some options that are out there are a four year college, community colleges and vocational or technical schools. Another option would be not going to college at all, but ask†¦show more content†¦But does the cost of the school outweigh not having that college education? If they do get that education, they make more money in their field of study and they learn more by getting that bachelor’s degree. Putting a cost on that is pointless. Thinking about getting a job in the field that has been chosen has to weigh on students minds, think about all of the students that think being a doctor or a lawyer might be their ticket to success. So consider this when thinking being a lawyer is the way to go, about 50,000 student graduate with a law degree, but there are only 30,000 positions available. Maybe consider a career where you learn more with on the job type training and choosing an area with high demand for that area would be a better option, like computer programmers. All in all learning should be the most important part of this and if other things happen during the process, like making more money or receiving a certain status by having that degree then so be it. Conversely, if the political situation is uncertain, it would cause the element of uncertainty in the business. In Indonesia, after the fall of the New Order, changes in politics and governance was characterized by a significant change in the political system (a process of demagnification) which had opened new opportunities and also new threats to the business community this country. For years, during New Order, political parties in Indonesia were only 3 parties: app, Global, and PDP. After New Order fell (Reformation Era), the number of political parties involved in general election increased significantly. The 1999 general election, the first general election in Reformation Era, was followed by 48 parties. Despite the number of political parties are always changing during the Reformation Era, political situation was relatively stable. The stability also continued under President Silo Bambina Hydrogen. However, in most current general election, few months ago, there were some instabilities in Indonesian politics. This paper will describe these conditions (the last general election) and their impacts on the industry, particularly palm oil industry, using the case of Golden Agric Resources Ltd, one of the biggest palm oil producer in Indonesia. 2. POLITICAL TURMOIL IN 2014 GENERAL ELECTION General election in Indonesia is run in phases, legislative election and presidential election. In 2014 general election, the legislative election was relatively conducive There were 15 political parties participated in the election, including 3 local political parties in Ache. This election was won by PAID with the total vote 18. 95% (whom. Penile. Com), followed by Global and Grainier on the second and third place. It was predicted that since the legislative election was held successfully and the situation was very conducive, reflected by there was no substantial protests or objections from he participants, the presidential election (which had two competing candidates, Parabola Substation-Hat Raja and Joke Widow-USAF Kali) would also run smoothly. However, the facts were totally different. Here are some events or facts that showed the unstable political conditions in Indonesia after presidential election in 2014: Different quick count results In quick count, both parties (Parabola-Hat and Kiowa-Kali) claimed as the winner Of the presidential election. There were some survey organizations stated that the election was won by Parabola-Hat, while the others stated he opposite. ISIS (Center for Strategic International Studies) through senior researcher, Philip Vermont, stated that there were advantages in Kiowa-Kaki. The figure reached 51. 9 percent, while Parabola-Hat gained 48. 1 percent. There were also some other survey organizations published similar results, stated that the winner was Kiowa-Kali, such as R D Compass, ISMS (Useful Musician Research and Consulting), and RI. Meanwhile, some other survey organizations indicated otherwise. A quick count conducted by Upstairs (Center for Policy Studies and Development Strategy) cleared that Parabola-Hat won the election by 52. 05%, whereabouts-J gained 47. 95 percent. Other survey organizations that declared Parabola- Hat as the winner were National Survey Institute (LSI) and the Indonesian Voice Network (SSI). These different quick count results were followed by announcement of victory by both candidates, which was the first time in Indonesia history, both competing candidates claimed as the winner. Moreover, supporters of both camps had celebrated their victories in separated places. Parabola’s withdrawal from election process Another surprising event happened on July 22, 2014, when General Elections Commission was announcing the recapitulation of the presidential election results. While the recapitulation was still ongoing, Parabola announced that he had withdrawn his presidential candidacy after denouncing the election process as undemocratic. The consolidation of political parties supporting Parabola and their actions in Parliament Competition between Parabola and Kiowa did not stop when the General Elections Commission stated that Kiowa-Koala was the winner of the presidential election. Parabola along with his supporting parties filed an election disputes to Constitutional Court, though the court finally rejected their petition. In parliament, the parties that were supporting Parabola also took several actions that made Indonesian politics became unstable. They asked the Parliament legalize the draft of a Law regarding the local elections. In this new law, direct elections for provincial governors, district chiefs and mayors were eliminated, replaced by appointment by local elected legislatures. There were many opinions from local or international institutions aid that this was a big hit for Indonesian democracy. Indonesian democracy that had been growing in SUB era, was experiencing a substantial setback. The most noticeable effects might be the impacts on the price of stock in Indonesian Stock Exchange. Just after those events happened, the market responded. The responses can be reflected on the chart of Composite Index (JOKE) for the last 6 months. Figure 1 . Composite Index (JOKE) Source: finance. Yahoo. Com Just after the presidential election day, the index was increasing, from 4,800 to more than 5,050. Some analysts argued that it was one of Kiosk’s effects. Despite there were some quick counts that stated that the winner was Parabola, since the reputation and credibility of those survey organizations were questionable, market believed that Kiowa would win the presidential election. On the day when General Elections Commission was announcing the recapitulation of the presidential election results, the index was slightly decreasing. It might be influenced by Parabola’s statement that he had withdrawn from the election process. This statement was perceived as sign of the upcoming political instability in Indonesia. Moreover, on that day, Parabola clearly stated that there was systematic violation of democracy inducted by General Elections Commission. The clearest evident how market reacted to the political condition might be reflected on the price of stock following what happened in the Parliament in the first week of October. After the Parliament passed the law regarding local elections, which automatically eliminated direct elections for local governments, the stocks dropped significantly. Many political analysts stated that by eliminating direct elections, Indonesian democracy had moved backwards. Golden Agric Resources stock, seemed to follow the market price in general. Its price also creased after what happened in Parliament in early October. Figure 2. Golden Agric Resources Stock Price Source: Source: finance. Yahoo. Com 4. CONCLUSION Political conditions in a country is an important factor in industry. The influence is channeled through the expectation of business players in the market. When the condition in a country is stable, investors are likely to be willing to invest their money in that country. On the other hand, political instability might frighten investors to put their money in a country, resulting â€Å"sell-actions† that eventually pushes the stock price. This condition happened in Indonesia recently, following the presidential elections that was won by Kiowa-Koala, resulted in the decreasing Of most stock price in Indonesian Stock Exchange, including the stock price of Golden Agric Resources. However, there is still optimism about political condition in the future. Kiowa;Kali have an important role to stabilize the political condition and create supporting environment for business. On the other hand, industry might also have to adapt with the changes happen. How to cite GBE Domestic Politics, Papers

Workgroup Learning Development Proposal †Myassignmenthelp.Com

Question: Discuss About The Workgroup Learning Development Proposal? Answer: Introducation The sudden change in the overall operational process both in context with technical and customer service department has caused severe problems. The first six months after the change took place were evident to encounter with increased number of calls, which resulted to become a matter of serious frustration and stress for the staffs (Kahn et al. 2017). A further instigation to this issue got raised when the staffs faced a sense of loss of colleagues as well as their overseas counterparts. The old structure being changed for the company has added to the overload of work as restructuring and expansion are conducted. Proposal objective The relocation of the Red Telecom organisation encompasses Customer Resolution Department for the Australian call centre. The formation of the team for the conduct of working along with a multi-skilling labor is encouraged with the inflow of an updated team leader role. Background information Red Telecom organisation is a telecommunication carrier based in Australia. They served data, internet, fiber optic internet; web hosting and home phone product through high-speed broadband service is caters for both business as well as residential purpose. it is only in the recent times that Red Telecom Australia underwent a major restructuring procedure both in the sphere of technological and customer service. The changes were taken place in context with customer call operations (Lehmann et al. 2017). Before provision of adequate training and learning development process a mere outsourcing call center was to be relied upon to attain support from overseas to handle the excess enquiries. The after hour services for Australian customers the same assistance was necessary. It is hence considered as a prospective measure to incorporate appropriate learning and development of the definite field to suffice servicing aids to generate the operations for the respective organisation. However, the need for cultural training along with technical training is essential to make the operation within call centers of overseas locations connected from Australia. Organizational objectives Red Telecom Organisation is known to follow their management decision regarding the formulation of the firms objectives. As suggested by the managements rationale such changes are necessary to be brought into practice for inducing a facilitating environment for the organisation. It shall not only contribute in enhancing the support and empowerment but also lead to innovative solutions for the Australian customers (Horn et al. 2017). The changes were therefore identified as extremely necessary to impact upon the company by transforming the perceptions of Reds service quality. As the required amount of proficiency was lacking among the employees an elaborate session of training the necessary aspects were to be given. Analysis on the basis of the observation and case study On the basis of the present case study an analysis can be drawn that training is necessary through various aspects to enhance the learning and development process among the staffs of Red Telecom Organisation (Kahn et al. 2017). After the analysis it can be suitably found that obtaining feedbacks against the work that the staffs perform help them to understand the areas they need to work in. the team leaders pose their valuable opinions regarding their working outputs which not only enable in identification of their faults but also inhibits the tendency to repeat such practice on different occasions. In order to convince the upper level senior management team with the upgraded performance level, the team leaders responsibilities are enhanced through incorporation of skilled efforts (Horn and Kane, 2015). They are required to take an account of members working under them. Self-reporting surveys are needed to be conducted by such team leaders. Gap/impact on client and/or organisation The role of team leader is given utmost relevance in upgrading the performance level through learning and development progress among all the staffs of the Red Telecom organisation. The employee behavior and the work efforts are critically analysed by the team leaders. Each of the employees tend to make faults or have their own incidents of excellence, those are critically scrutinized or encouraged respectively by the team leader (Lehmann et al. 2017). In order to identify and understand the gap in the skills of the staff members which are resulting in failure to achieve the customer demands are assessed. The customer complaint nature is tried to be configured to be able to evaluate the training process accordingly. The staffs are required to train in such a manner that they become equipped to address the customer querie Individual intervention The Team Leader is attributed to perform the pivotal role for the particular said organisation (Li et al. 2015). Red Telecom organisation is primarily concerned with the Technological aspects although invests most of their resources towards the Customer Resolution Department. In context with the roles of the staff members it was found out by the team leaders that they were incapable to fulfill the customer requirements through skilled efforts. The employees lacked in required skills to deal with changes taking place in the internal strategic configuration. The employees due to failure to achieve the resolution point regarding customer services used to pass on the complaints to higher authorities. These incidences are evident to result in workplace tension striking with the overseas colleagues regarding matters concerning customer services (Seidel Horn and Kane, 2015). Therefore it is necessary on the part of the Team Leader to generate appropriate and a friendly communication process within the workplace to facilitate the performance. Description and analysis of the performance issues/knowledge In order to address the gaps identified by the Team Leader in the Red Telecom organisation some of the extremely necessary steps are required to be taken as prerequisite. The training course acts as a potential means to build an adequate team which comprises efficient staff members. The diverse theoretical concepts tend to implicate upon the learning and development processes to generate productivity among the employees (Morey et al. 2015). The behaviorism theory indicates of the fact that any unwanted practice can be avoided and controlled by following a certain regime. The Red Telecom organisation also adheres to implementing such a procedure upon their employees. Behaviorism believes in the fact that on repeatition of the same habits the habit gets automatically strengthened which helps to remove the undesired practices. On achieving such habits bonus points in terms of incentives are extended towards the employee to reinforce their behavior with positive attitude. Verbal reinforcements are utilized by the Team Leaders to generate effective and proficient skilled activities by the organizational staffs (Goldman et al. 2014). The deficit that lies with this theoretical approach states that the learners are not prepared for problem solving and creative thinking . The Constructivism theory is one which is regarded as a better and more appropriate approach to gain greater acceptance among organizational scenario (Ens et al. 2017). The individual intervention on the part of each of employees is involved in this process. This is one such approach where case studies are of great benefit. The similar scenario that has been successfully encountered and managed are referred to by the staffs of the organisation. This helps resolve real life events in the most practical manner. Constructivism is that approach where learning and development is generated among the needed employees by assessing their problem areas. Rigorous brainstorming is done by the Team Leaders as well as the employees to bring in the necessary changes and managed with the changed surroundings. It is brought in by the diverting skilled labor and effective communication process (Grason et al. 2015). A collaborative learning measure is what mostly intended keeping relevance with the pre sent scenario is. Group work and collaborative development and learning methods are appropriately practiced to facilitate appropriate behavior using Constructivism theory. Dr Daniel J. Boorstin Essays - Daniel J. Boorstin, Librarians

Dr Daniel J. Boorstin Dr. Daniel J. Boorstin (1914- ) holds many honorable positions and has received numerous awards for his notable work. He is one of America's most eminent historians, the author of more than fifteen books and numerous articles on the history of the United States, as well as a creator of a television show. His editor- wife, Ruth Frankel Boorstin, a Wellesley graduate, has been his close collaborator. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, and raised in Oklahoma, he received his undergraduate degree with highest honors from Harvard and his doctor's degree from Yale. He has spent a great deal of his life abroad, first in England as a Rhodes Scholar at Balliol College, Oxford. More recently he has been visiting professor of American History at the University of Rome, Italy, the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and at Kyoto University, Japan. He was the first incumbent of the chair of American History at the Sorbonne, and was the Professor of American History and Institutions as well as Fellow of Trinity College, at Cambridge University. He has been director of the National Museum of American History and the Librarian of Congress Emeritus. He is a member of the Massachusetts Bar and has practiced law. He has received more than fifty honorary degrees and has been honored by the governments of France, Belgium and Portugal. In 1989 he received the National Book Award for Distinguished Contributions to American Letters by the NationalBook Foundation. Dr. Boorstin's many books include the trilogy The Americans: The Colonial Experience, which won the Bancroft Prize, The Americans: The National Experience, which won the Parkman Prize, and The Americans: The Democratic Experience, which won the Pulitzer Prize. His 1983 work, The Discoverers, a best selling history of man's search to know the world and himself, was awarded the Watson Davis Prize of the History of Science Society. His other works include The Mysterious Science of Law, The Genius of American Politics, and The Republic of Technology. In addition, he is the editor of An American Primer and the thirty volume series The Chicago History of American Civilization. His books have been translated into twenty-five languages (GBN Reviews, 1997). Most of Dr. Boorstin's books are not written as conventional chronological histories. Instead, their brief chapters explore many disparate facets of American culture. The topics which he covers range from the new grammar, the rise of the candy bar and the moon landing, to the development of the cash register (Minskoff, 1973). He does not relate those facts simply because they are themselves interesting, amusing and enlightening - though they are that, too. He uses them all to help ask the questions that he strives to answer in most of his books: What has life come to mean and cease to mean to the late- twentieth century Americans? He makes history into a kind of national autobiography, reminding the people that they have made themselves what theyare. Dr. Boorstin's most known book is probably The Americans: The Democratic Experience. The democracy that is described in this book has little to do with majority rule and minority rights. It is a full scale portrait of modern America, which describes not only the major events that were vital to the nation's history, but the countless and little-noticed revolutions, which occurred not on battlefields but in people's homes, farms, factories, schools and stores. These revolutions make something surprising and unprecedented of everyday experience. He shows that the Americans have become a nation which is held together by what its members buy, the advertising they see, defined by how they count themselves and how others count them, characterized by the way they describe their wealth or poverty. The endless streams of property created by the American corporation, the new ambiguity of ownership in a nation of franchised outlets, and the new democracy of packaging, in which the wrapping of items often costs more than their contents, in Dr. Boorstin's words, add up to the "thinner life of things"(Boorstin,1973). The quest for novelty has brought, along with its rewards, a new bewilderment over what people really mean by something new. The very idea of progress is displaced by the rate of growth. According to Dr. Boorstin, all of that adds up to the Democratic Experience. This book aims at a balanced assessment of the price and the promise of what American civilization has done with and for and to Americans. The book's anecdotal style makes it a great reading experience. However, Boorstin omits many happenings that had a great impact on American culture, such as the labor movement and the Vietnam War. Boorstin may "dislike important events"(Mohs,1973). However, those two events are too important for

Accounting Module 5 SLP Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Accounting Module 5 SLP - Assignment Example Relevant costs are also called differential costs. If the future costs are going to be incurred regardless of the decision that is made, those costs are not relevant. Sunk costs are never relevant. The repair cost of $26000 is relevant to the decision on hand whether to sell the truck or get it repaired. The sale proceeds offered by repair shop of $10000 is also relevant. The purchase cost of used truck of $ 34000 is relevant to the decision. The amount offered by the insurance company of $30000 would be the same whether Pizzahut gets the truck repaired or disposes the truck and purchases the used truck. Since the amount is same under both the alternatives it is a non-relevant cost. Similarly, the original cost of truck of $50000 is a sunk cost and would be same under both the alternatives and hence it is also a non-relevant cost. The classification of costs into Relevant and non-relevant costs aids in decision making. The cost with respect to the alternative of disposing the truck is $34000 - $10000 which is equal to $24000. Thus, the gain to the company in choosing this alternative is $26000(cost of repair) minus $24000, which is $2000. Thus, the analysis helped the company reach a decision which resulted in a gain of $2000 to the company. 1. The Impact of Business Partnering on the HR Function and HR Practice Literature review

The Impact of Business Partnering on the HR Function and HR Practice - Literature review Example This paper stresses that one can say that a great number of the various impacts that can be identified as a result of business partnering on the HR function are positive. This new practice allows for the expansion of the various HR practices that take place in an organization and can therefore be said to aid the Human Resource Management process through strengthening its capabilities and presence. The relationship between business partnering and Human Resource can not be ignored as it can be considered to be a symbiotic relationship whereby, each benefits from the other. This report makes a conclusion that managing to do so will strengthen the success rate that a business will be able to enjoy as well as improve the business frame of the company through better tactics and management of resources. In order to find a way that these practices can work in harmony with one another however, one has to identify the impact that business partnering has on the HR practice and its various functions. In order to do this, it is essential that one understands the full context of both business partnering and Human Resource Management. By identifying what the two practices are one is able to understand their operations and the best way to integrate both systems into one unified network that is able to easily collaborate with each other. Human Resource Management can be termed as the management of an organizations workforce or employee base. (Nag, Hambrick & Chen, 2007). It deals with the relationship between the organization and its employees and the various subject matters that arise from such a relationship such as the hiring and firing of individuals among other criteria. The main aim of Human Resource Management is ensuring that the organization has a capable workforce that will allow it to carry out its operations without a problem (Conaty & Charan, 2011). In this regard, HRM can be considered to be the backbone of the operations that take place within an organization. It can be seen as one of the most important departments within an organization and thus it is essential that it is approached in the correct manner and with sustainable ideologies. A failure to do so may lead to the downfall of the organization as a result of a breakdown in operations. There are a number of responsibilities that are held by the HRM department and most of this are with regard

Employee Compensation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Employee Compensation - Essay Example This essay stresses that organizations that are since committed to developing a compensation system that is designed around performance will want to consider the use of incentive pay. Typically given in addition to-rather than in place of-the basic wage, incentive plans should be viewed as an additional dimension to the wage structure. Incentives can be paid based on individual, group, or organization wide performance – a pay-for-performance concept. This paper makes a conclusion that the compensation structure consists of lavishing exorbitant sums on management level while penny-pinching on pay for other workers. This is an example of a harmful business model. The company can, and should narrow its pay gap by bringing down the top – and lifting the bottom up. It has a pay for performance plan for the management level employees. This is strength of the compensation structure but this need to be stretched out to the entire workforce so that the weakness exhibited by way of the huge executive compensation. To conclude, instead of cutting down on the executive compensation package, it would be beneficial if an opportunity is given to enter the profit sharing plan allowing employees to share in the success of a firm by distributing part of the company’s profits back to the workers. In essence, employees become owners of the company. The logic behind profit-sharing plans is that they increase commitment and loyalty to th e organization.

Advantages disadvantages and impacts of Globalization

Advantages disadvantages and impacts of Globalization Introduction Globalization is a process in which limited societies, economies, and cultures have connected through a global system of trade. The term is sometimes used to refer particularly to economic globalization: the incorporation of national economies into the international economy through trade, foreign direct investment, capital flows, and increase of technology. Globalization is generally known as determined by a combination of economic, technological, socio-cultural, and political factors this term can also refers to the worldwide distribution of ideas, languages, or trendy culture. Competition increases between countries. (Alassane D. Ouattara, 1997) http://www.imf.org/external/np/speeches/1997/052197.htm Globalization is the result of a number of interconnected developments including: The growth and relative implication of foreign direct investment. The internationalization of economic markets. The rapidly and continuing development of communication and transport technology Liberalization and Deregulation   Public sector services converted into privatization (www.tssa.org.uk) http://www.tssa.org.uk/article-38.php3?id_article=2190 Economic globalization is characterized by increasing in trade and investment, liberalization, privatization of public services and deregulation of many government institutions. Economic globalization is also linked with increasing inequality in wealth and influence between nations and within nations as well as between public and private sectors. Economic globalization has been taking place for the last several years it has begun to happen at an increased rate over the last 20-30 years. This recent boom has been largely accounted by developed economies linked with less developed economies, by resources of foreign direct investment, the reduction of trade obstacles, and the modernization of these developing cultures. Environmental globalization recognizes that an environmental incident or impact that happens in one country is not restricted to that area but has the potential to affect the entire worlds well being. Thus, communicative globalization refers to the rapid growth of communi cation technologies such as internet, telephone, satellite and so on, Ability to link people, information and ideas around the world which impact on culture, both positively and negatively. (www.scribd.com) (function() { var scribd = document.createElement("script"); scribd.type = "text/javascript"; scribd.async = true; scribd.src = "https://www.scribd.com/javascripts/embed_code/inject.js"; var s = document.getElementsByTagName("script")[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(scribd, s); })() Privatization is a requirement for globalization and goes side by side with it. Nowadays the phrase of globalization has gained importance in all over of the world. Globalization may have positive or negative impact on developing countries. However, the developing nations can survive by alteration in the development of globalization by public policy readjustment for privatization, deregulation and liberalization. The wave of financial globalization as the mid-1980s has been marked by increase in capital flows among industrial countries, particularly between industrial and developing countries. Where these capital flows have been linked with the high growth rates in some developing countries. A number of countries have experienced interrupted collapse in growth rates and major financial crises over the same period, that disaster have exacted a serious toll in terms of macroeconomic and social costs. Trade could affect these inequalities only through its effect on economic growth in individual countries. A central issue, so concerns the possible effect of trade on economic growth. ( khair Uz Zaman,; , qaiser Aman;, 2007) Key Institutions of Globalization The economic globalization lies with certain influential financial institutions that are entirely in the hands of western countries. They include: International Monetary Fund (IMF) World Bank (WB) World Trade Organization (WTO) These institutions are also known as the Bretton Woods institutions and mainly influence on the economic and political policy formulation in developing countries. (Rahman MD Faizur, 2005) History Globalization: The start of globalization goes back to the second half of the 19th century. When nationality as the basis for state formation was already widespread. The World Bank classifies the development of globalization since then as follows: The 1st wave of globalization: 1870 -1914 The retreat into nationalism: 1914 -1945 The 2nd wave of globalization: 1945 1980 The new and 3rd wave of globalization: 1980 The first wave of globalization was started in 1870 and constant until the beginning of the First World War in 1914. This period of globalization made easy for the delivery of imported goods as well as the exported goods. The development of telegraph helped to begin contact over long distance. The period of 1914 to 1945 was tagged a retreat of independence and extensively improved in the technical condition of the transport and communication. The great depression of the late 1920s and early 1930s direct to protectionism, which additionally restricted the international division of labors. The second wave of globalization (1945-1980) followed the patriotic period. As a response to the war, there was much effort to enhance international hold. This was reflected in the establishment of the United Nations in 1945 and the Bretton woods institutions in 1946. In 1980, trade of manufactures was to large extent freed of barriers. In the case of agricultural products, trade was restricted between developing countries; imports of products of developing countries were liberalized if they did not compete with those of the developed countries. The third wave of globalization started around 1980 and this phase continues today. According to the World Bank, this period has four characteristics that separate it from the previous period. Large numbers of developing countries bankrupt into the global markets Developing countries became increasingly marginalized and suffered from declining incomes and increasingly poverty Worldwide capital movements and immigration became substantial. Increasing destruction of production. (Kotilainen, Markku; Kaitila, Ville;, 2002) Globalization, as World War II, is basically the result of planning by politicians to break down the borders obstacles in trade to increase the prosperity and interdependence, as a result to reduce the chances of future war between the countries. Since World War II, barriers to international trade have been significantly decreased through international agreements GATT. Particularly initiative carried out as a result of GATT and WTO, for which GATT is the foundation, has included: Promotion of free trade: Eliminating of tariffs; creation of free trade sector with small or no tariffs. Reduced transportation cost, especially resulting from development of containerization for ocean shipping. Reduction , elimination or coordination of financial support for local businesses Creation of financial support for worldwide corporations. Coordination of intellectual poverty laws across the majority of states, with more restrictions. Super national identification of intellectual poverty limitations. (www.scribd.com) http://www.scribd.com/doc/20581903/Globalization-and-pakistani-economy The phrase Globalization has been used broadly by media and educational in recent years. This describes the process of generate networks of connections through a selection of flows of information, people, capital goods and technology. In economics, globalization connect in various phase of cross-border dealings, free international capital flows, foreign direct investment, portfolio investment, and rapid and widespread distribution of technology. Globalization enhances the economic prosperity and leads to more efficient allocation of resources, which, in turn will result in higher output, more employment, lower prices and higher standard of living. However, some critics worry about the resulting outsourcing and off shoring, which have destroyed the American manufacturing sector. (www.scribd.com) (function() { var scribd = document.createElement("script"); scribd.type = "text/javascript"; scribd.async = true; scribd.src = "https://www.scribd.com/javascripts/embed_code/inject.js"; var s = document.getElementsByTagName("script")[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(scribd, s); })() Advantages of Globalization Goods and people are transferred with more easiness from one country to another. Due to globalization war between developed countries has reduced. Free trading increases the interdependence of the nation-state. People connected in the world due to global mass media. Communication between individuals and corporations in the world increases. Environmental security in developed countries increases. Encouragement of more researches and development of new machines and equipment for domestic use. People connected in the globe due to worldwide mass media. Strong competition thus encourages higher quality products Global mass media connects all the people in the world Increase in economic growth of the country. Reduction of cultural barriers increases the global village effect (www.buzzle.com) www.buzzle.com/articles/advantages-of-globalization.html DISADVANTAGES OF GLOBALIZATION Increased in flow of skilled and non-skilled jobs from developed to developing nations as corporations try to find out the cheapest labor Corporate influence of nation-states far exceeds that of civil society organizations and average individuals Increased chance of economic disruptions in one country affecting all countries. Threat that control of world media by a handful of corporations will limit cultural appearance. Greater chance of reactions for globalization being aggressive in an attempt to defend cultural traditions. Greater risk of diseases being transported unintentionally between nations Spread of a materialistic lifestyle and attitude that sees consumption as the path to prosperity International bodies like the World Trade Organization violate the national and individual independence. Increase in the chances of universal war within developing countries and open war between developing countries as they struggle for resources Decreases in environmental reliability as polluting corporations take advantage of weak regulatory rules in developing countries. (www.darkseptemberrain.com) Impacts of Globalization According to economists, there are a lot of global events connected with globalization and incorporation. It is easy to classify the changes brought by the globalization. Improvement of International Trade. Globalization increases the international trade between many countries and makes the sale or purchase easy. Technological Progress. Governments have upgraded their level of technology to compete and be competitive globally. Increasing Influence of Multinational Companies. An important trend in the globalization is the increasing influence and broadening scope of the multinational companies. A company that has subsidiaries in various countries is called a multinational. Power of the WTO, IMF, and WB. Another effect of globalization is the strengthening power and influence of international institutions such as the World Trade Organization, International Monetary Fund, and World Bank. Greater Mobility of Human Resources across Countries.   Globalization allows countries to provide their manpower in countries with cheap labor. For instance, the manpower shortages in Taiwan, South Korea, and Malaysia provide opportunities for labor exporting countries such as the Philippines to bring their human resources to those countries for employment. Greater Outsourcing of Business Processes to Other Countries. Different countries are tremendously benefiting from this trend of global business outsourcing. Global companies in the US take advantage of the cheaper labor and highly skilled workers that countries can suggest. Civil Society.   Broadening scope of the global civil society is an important trend in globalization. Many institutions are established in the country and run by citizens which civil society often refers to NGOs. Global civil society refers to NGOs that advocate certain issue or cause. There are many NGOs that promote good environment to womens and support their rights. Government and NGOs have the same goal of serving the people but these NGOs are working to establish polices that are beneficial to all. (www.hubpages.com) http://hubpages.com/hub/Definition-of-Globalization Effects of globalization More goods and services are available Expansion of new markets Income generation and increased in economic growth Development in the volume and range of cross border transactions in goods and services. Increase in the use of new technology in small-scale manufacturing to increase the level of production. The global common market has a freedom to trade of goods and capital The emergence of a new market where the products were market at an international level for all type of consumers. Subsidies for local businesses decrease Local consumer products are exported to other countries Capital controls reduce or conquer Enhancement in worldwide modern traditions/cultures. (www.buzzle.com) http://www.buzzle.com/articles/advantages-of-globalization.html DEVELOPING COUNTRY Developing countries are those which have a lower per capita income, unemployment, lack of goods and services. People have a lower standard of living, high infant mortality rate. Characteristics of Developing Economy: The common characteristics of developing countries: Lower living standards Insufficient housing Low education standard Increase in death rate Limited life and work expectancy High and rising levels of unemployment and under employment. Lack of technology Low standard of education (www.shvoong.com) http://www.shvoong.com/social-sciences/1758902-characteristics-developing-countries/ Advantages of globalization in the developing world: Globalization increases the economic prosperity and opportunity in the developing world. The countrywide freedom is enhanced and increases the resources of the developing countries and there is a more efficient use of resources. All the countries involved in the free trade are at a profit. As a result, there are lower prices, more employment and a better standard of life in these developing nations. It is feared that some developing areas progress at the costs of other developed areas. However, such worries are unsuccessful as globalization is a positive-sum chance in which the skills and technologies enable to increase the living standards throughout the world. Liberals look at globalization as an efficient tool to eliminate poverty and allow the poor people to hold a strong grip in the global economy. The Impact of Globalization on the Pakistan Economy Globalization is not new. Pakistan has been involved in trade, investment, financial flows, technology transfers and the movement of labor since its foundation. There are a number of factors that have aided this transformation. The expansion of new markets: Foreign exchange and capital markets are linked internationally. They control 24 hours a day with contact any where in the world possible in all time. Financial deregulation increases the impact of globalization on the economy. New technology and the tools of globalization: The internet, email, mobile phones, media and communication networks have all sped up the process of globalization. They have increased the broaden of communication and and speed knowledge transfer. New institutional players : The World Trade Organization (WTO) has emergent right over national governments, as does the IMF with its restrictions and controls it can force on nations requiring support. Multinational corporations have more economic power than many other nations. Include funds and financial dealers are able to control financial flows and consequently exchange rates, leaving nations helpless in their wake. New rules and restrictions: Mutual agreements on trade, services and intellectual property rights, supported by strong enforcement instrument, decrease the possibility for national governments to extend their own economic policies. New Cuban Cuisine :: Cuban Food

Includes Recipes New Cuban Cuisine The Cuban style of cooking is simple in concept but complex in flavor. Much Cuban food owes its heritage and tradition from Africa and neighboring, Caribbean cultures. However, there are two distinctive styles of cooking: "the classic" whose techniques and ingredients have been in use for a long time across the island, and "the new," labeled nuevo Cubano, which adds a variety of herbs and spices from other cuisine and emphasizes presentation. For example, the province of Oriente, in eastern Cuba, is well known for its contribution of spicier and more robust dishes to the cuisine of the island due to the influx of Haitian and Jamaican immigrants to the island beginning in the 1790's. In the states, Cubans, too, have opted to choose hot peppers, like blazing scotchbonnets and serranos, to prepare recipes such as black bean salsa. Cubans who arrived in the United States in the late 50's and 60's had to make some adaptations to their cooking. Many markets did not carry the vegetables, fruits or cuts of meat that they were accustomed to using in their island kitchens. Lard and olive oil, which are generally used in Cuban cooking, had to be replaced by other cooking oils. Lard was too difficult to find and olive oil was too expensive; a substitute had to be found. Cooks started using vegetable oil, which was readily available and affordable. Nowadays, safflower and canola oils have become more preferable because they are healthier. Many items are now also available in low-fat versions. The consumption of salt has too been cut back thanks to low- sodium products. Many Cubans in exile, such as my neighbor, Roca Beiro, a professional caterer whom I had the opportunity to interview, informed me that many Cubans have cut down on the starches they consume and that they try to follow a healthier diet. Due to the lack of time in their day to day life, many buy products, such as black beans, because preparing them from scratch is very time consuming. In addition, Cubans have added more salads to their diet, use less sauces, and prepare fewer potajes (stews). They have also adapted more American foods into their daily life since their children are exposed to them at school and through their acquaintance with endless chains of fast food restaurants in their communities. For example, breakfast in Cuba usually consists of cafà © con leche and tostada (coffee with milk and Cuban toast).

How hot can you be?

Some of them use repetition to make you remember, emotions to touch your feelings, and well-known famous people to show you trust. Some of these advertisements are more powerful than others and this is the case of QuickTime ads. This advertisement is very effective, not only because it incorporates a well known famous person that â€Å"uses† the pill, it also shows a link to a reliable website that gives the prospective buyer health information and they use the repetition psychological fact to grab women attention. This weight loss product's advertisement was created to catch the attention of all women. The advertisement asks women how hot could they be and displays a picture of the sex icon Kim Sardinian. By doing this, the correlation between using the QuickTime product and looking like Kim Sardinian is created. What woman does not want to look beautiful? The advertisement indicates that using the product shown will allow the person being targeted to look better than ever. Th e ad commits a logical fallacy by making the false correlation between taking he product and solving all of the users physical aesthetic problems. What if someone has an enormous nose? Will â€Å"CT† help? The product fails to specifically target an overweight audience but instead targets all women, making the ad less effective. How can you trust a product that makes a promise it cannot keep? On top of the tactics mentioned before, the ad shows a link to WebMD (which is reliable website). Women who see this on the product's ad would probably see these pills as a safe option. However there is information proving the opposite, an example f this is in an article on the Time Magazine July editions which contains an article that explains to readers that weight loss products are heavy on claims, but there is a scarcity of scientific proof.According to them, nowadays there are no products that could be considered â€Å"safe, effective and rigorously tested. They also mention that th e U. S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) â€Å"(Park and Suffering 20) do not evaluate most weight loss supplements for safety. However with all this valuable information that loud be easily found on the web, many women might be tricked into thinking this product is safe due to the advertisement containing a reliable medical website. There is much psychological research that proves that repetition works very well in influencing people, and this ad is not the exception. If a woman sees the advertisement Just one time she might ignore it, but if the ad keeps reoccurring then it will most likely catch the audiences attention. As it says on the website changing's. Org â€Å"Repetition creates a pattern, which consequently and naturally Arabs our attention at first and then creates the comfort of familiarity. † (â€Å"Repetition Principle†).Familiarity subsequently hints liking more than dislike, companies know this and they apply it very well to their advertisements. Ther efore even women, who are not thinking on buying the product, probably would unconsciously do it. In conclusion this advertisement is very effective, not only because it incorporates a well known famous person that â€Å"uses† the pill, it also shows a link to a reliable website that gives the prospective buyer health information and they use psychological petition in various forms of media to grab women's attention. There are many companies like QuickTime that are taking advantage of people that have low self- esteem, by advertising a product that supposedly makes you lose weight and become more aesthetically appealing. This advertisement gives a false claim that it can simply solve a persons more complicated problems by taking a â€Å"miracle† pill. By incorporating a medical site to the ad also gives a sense of safety in this pill and makes the targeted audience have a sense of trust in this product.

Calculus Calculus is the mathematical study of change, in the same way that geometry is the study of shape and algebra is the study of operations and their application to solving equations. It has two major branches, differential calculus (concerning rates of change and slopes of revues), and integral calculus (concerning accumulation of quantities and the areas under and between curves); these TV branches are related to each other by the fundamental theorem of calculus. Both branches make use of the fundamental notions of convergence of infinite sequences and infinite series to a well-defined limit. Generally considered to have been founded in the 17th century by Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz, today calculus has widespread uses in science, engineering and economics and can solve many problems that algebra alone cannot. Calculus is a part of modern mathematics education. A course in calculus is a gateway to Other, more advanced courses in mathematics devoted to the study of functions and limits, broadly called mathematical analysis. Calculus has historically been called the calculus of infinitesimals, or infinitesimal calculus. The word calculus comes from Latin (calculus) and refers to a small stone used for counting. More generally, calculus (plural calculi) refers to any method or system of calculation guided by the symbolic manipulation of expressions. Some examples of other well-known calculi are propositional calculus, calculus of variations, lambda calculus. Part 1 INTERNET REFERENCE BOOK Leibniz was the first to see that the coefficients of a system of linear equations could be arranged into an array, now called a matrix which can be manipulated to find the of the system, if any.

How to Compose a Worthy Research Paper on Social Media

How to Compose a Worthy Research Paper on Social Media One can hardly find a person who has never used social media. Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, WeChat, and other social platforms let people communicate, find good friends, learn new things, get a job, purchase things, study, learn languages, and do a number of other things. Still, it’s not so easy to find interesting research paper topics on social media. Research paper on social media is a typical academic task for students. That’s quite difficult to investigate the topic being addicted to social media. Contemporary students cannot imagine their lives without virtual chatting, likes, and comments. That’s why tutors often ask them to write an objective academic paper on the positive and negative influence of social media. How to Start There are 5 things a student should do before starting writing a research paper: Find a catchy issue for the discussion and compose a striking title. For example, you can discuss the following topic â€Å"How to Limit Your Child’s Time on the Internet when You Personally Cannot Spend a Day without Facebook and YouTube†. Look for a piece of evidence, facts, and statics on reliable sources. One shouldn’t take information reading someone’s blog because a person supplies it with subjective data. Such sources lack objectivity and should not be applied to a college paper on social media. Study the requirements of the college and do everything exactly as they ask. Find a proper sample of the paper devoted to social media and study it. Remember that your paper should include some innovation or at least a unique point of view. If you have chosen the topic, done thorough research, learned the requirements, and thought of some original solution to the problem, it’s high time to start writing the paper. Mind Your Structure One should create an outline because it helps to ponder over the problem and create a proper logical structure. Each research paper has its introduction, body, and conclusion. Some papers require bibliography and appendices. The introductory part should also have a thesis statement. It usually consists of one or two sentences and reflects the key issue of the problem. For example, â€Å"People spend up to 9 hours per day messaging and viewing posts on social platforms. There must be places which prohibit the use of social media in order to prevent Internet dependency.† All parts of the paper should support the main idea given in the thesis statement. So, the introduction should give the statistics or some facts proving that many people depend on the Internet and that there should be some way out of the situation. The body paragraphs should give possible ways to solve the problem. For instance, a student may suggest providing cafes, parks, and other places which can create a cozy and pleasant atmosphere so that nobody would dare to think of chatting and entertaining on Facebook or any other social platform. The conclusion should sum everything up. For example, a student can say that social networks are useful but there is the need to distract attention from the Internet activity.

American Superconductor Company Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

American Superconductor Company - Essay Example They also have to follow the guidelines given by Securities and Exchange Commission. Financial statements are used by all the stakeholders of the company. They are made to provide true and fair view of the financial health of the company. Hence if the statements do not give true and fair view of the financial health of the company statements have to be restated. In this project, restatement of financial statements of the company American Superconductor (AMSC) has been studied. American Superconductor deals in power generation systems. It develop system both mechanical and electrical equipments which are used in wind turbine system. They are also into the business of manufacturing power cables and system of voltage stabilization (American Superconductor-a, 2011). It is quoted in NASDAQ. The current share price is $7.78 (American Superconductor-b, 2011). Its last five years it had grew annually by 27.56% and the revenue grew by 40.22%. In terms of profitability currently its operating margin is 16.23% (American Superconductor-c, 2011). Most of its shares are held by Douglas. They hold about 10797500 shares. Many financial institutions like RCM Capital Management LLC, Columbia Partners LLC Investment Management etc also hold shares of American Superconductor (American Superconductor-d, 2011). The president and chief executive officer of American Superconductor is Dan McGahn (American Superconductor-e, 2011).... The main change which they want to implement is to record its transaction as per cash basis. Previously American Superconductor had recorded some receipts on the basis of receipts of shipments but the payments were still due on those transactions. They had a pile of pending money due from the customers. As a result they had a history of operating losses. Most of the shipments receipts were not ever paid. All these things were increasing the operating loss. This also resulted on incorrect disclosure of revenues. Hence it decided that after 31str of August. AMSC will not consider revenues from certain Chinese customers until they are paid. This excluded Sinovel from whom American Superconductor had not received any amount in the first quarter. As the amount of debtors was increasing, the company was falling short of liquid cash. The new projects were getting delayed because of unavalibility of liquid cash. The company was also suffering because of exchange rate. The company also has ma ny foreign buyers who made the payments at a later date due to which the company had also suffered loss because of exchange rate fluctuations. They had a plan of acquiring the company but because of not having enough funds, the plan was getting delayed. There was also a risk that if they failed to acquire the Switch their share price may decline and there goodwill will also be affected. Therefore they decide to restate the financial statements which will present true and fair view of their revenues, the actual revenues which they can use (Davens, 2011). Impact of Financial Restatement As we it is already discussed that when the financial statements does not give true and fair view of financial health of the company the financial statements need to be restated. International Business Management Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

International Business Management - Assignment Example The implications of these strategies are recommended to future managers for implementation in the organizational policies for getting competitive advantage in the market. Introduction This assignment is about the position of competitive advantage attained by Procter and Gamble and the study of the various approaches and strategies that have been adopted by the organization to rise to a competitive leadership position in the market. The topic is worth to be studied as it would enable us to validate the theories of the competitive advantage with the real example of Procter and Gamble. The implication of these strategies which are namely innovative strategies, cost leadership strategies, differentiation strategy and operation efficiency could be linked to the recent developments in the business of Procter and Gamble. Due to the innovative strategies, Procter and Gamble has been able to restructure its business process and operations and they have been able to track the demand and needfu l to be done to meet the customer needs (Barner, 1991, p.102). Along with that operational efficiency has been attained supported by the cost effective production. These features put Procter and Gamble in a relatively superior position in the market which was reflected in increased acceptability of its products that has driven the business growth (Mullen and Stumpf, 1987, p.38). The review of literature on the topic has been presented followed by the detailed analysis and findings on the strategies adopted by Procter and Gamble for gaining competitive advantage. Literature Review The diamond model was proposed by Michael Porter in 1985 which highlights some of the drawbacks of the theory of comparative advantage. According to this theory, the nations and the business houses focus on the growth of productivity for gaining competitive advantage. In order to attain growth in productivity, the cheap labour that is available could be utilized by the forces of production. Figure 1: Diamon d Model The model has analysed the notion of competitiveness using six broad factors discussed as follows: Factors conditions include capital resources, physical resources, infrastructure and human resources. The demand conditions prevailing in the domestic market can contribute to create competitiveness for the companies when there is pressure from the domestic buyers to innovate new and differentiated products from that of the competitors. The supporting industries are important for the innovation purposes since they are cost effective and can contribute in the upgrading process whereas the government can contribute to the above determinants by influencing the supply conditions as well as demand conditions. The diamond model reduces the high degree of emphasis on the availability of natural resources inside the geographical boundaries which brings out the limitations of the theory of comparative advantage (Stupmf and Dunbar, 1990, p.22). According to the founder of this theory and many other experts, the competitive advantage could be attained by the organizations due to building up unique capabilities that help them to outperform their competitors (Peteraf, 1993, p.185). The various ways in which the companies have attained competitive advantage in the market are due to the access gained to specialized resources of production.

PESTLE analysis for the LUKoil company Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

PESTLE analysis for the LUKoil company - Essay Example Theoretical view of LUKOIL In monitoring of the company’s macro-environmental or external marketing factors, the analysis would help in shedding light on some of the factors that have an impact on Lukoil Company. As a major market player, Lukoil Company operates through four operating segments. These are the exploration and production part, the process of refining, Marketing and Distribution, chemicals segment, and power generation segment (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development 2003, p. 23). This comes through exploration of natural resources in order to produce crude oil and natural gas. The expansion of this company extends its interests in operational zones by holding properties in Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, South America, South East Asia, the Middle East, and North and western Africa (Kotok & Sciarretta 2010, p. 78). The success of Lukoil depends on its versatility to navigate the political, economic, social, technological, environmental, and legal factors surrounding its operations, since it is an international corporation cutting across the business world. PESTEL ANALYSIS Political and Economical factors The political factors stem from the extend of the government’s policies in intervening the economy by either through political stability or instability, foreign trade, tax policy, labour laws, in addition, trade restriction. Since Lukoil is an international corporation, its operation, and success cut through many political realms and may certainly influence how the company does business (International Business Publications, USA 2011, p. 23). It is therefore the mandate of the Lukoil Company to respond to the current and potential legislations in order to adjust their market policy accordingly. The profitability of Lukoil Company largely relies on its economic factors (Plunkett 2008, p. 120). There are macro-economical factors like economic growth, interest rates, inflation, and disposal income of consumers, exch ange rates, and businesses. The oil product profits and losses that this company derives from diverse contexts of its markets come with the way the management of demand goes on in the respective economies of operation. This varies, as different countries especially in the East, cannot compare their economy with countries of the West like USA. How well Lukoil adjusts itself to the governments’ mechanism such as interest rate control, taxation policy and government expenditure determines their gain or loss in the economies of investments. Social and Technological factors There are also social cultural factors in the regions with the highest Lukoil investment, which influence a lot on its operations. Many regions have different beliefs, and shared attitudes within their population. Compare the social factors of Eastern Europe and those of East and South Asia and this would culminate in the way the consumption of products do range of different contexts (Marinova & Marinov 2003, p . 104). The large influence of this will depend on the region’s population growth, health consciousness, age distribution, and career aptitude. The marketers of Lukoil have no choice other than understand their global customers and their preferences. The way Lukoil markets its products have to

Looking Glass Self Essay Example for Free

Looking Glass Self Essay In the most basic terms the Looking Glass self is your self image which is formed by the views others hold of you. These views the people around you have can have either a positive or negative effect on your self imagine. First we picture how our personality and appearance will come off to others, and then we think about how they will judge our personality and appearance. As people around us pass judgment on who we are this is when our self-concept develops, basically who we think we are and how we feel about ourselves as a whole. These judgments’ can have a powerful effect on ones beliefs and feelings about themselves. I’ve felt and been effected by the beliefs another person has about me. When I was in the 8th grade I thought I was a wonderful student, smart, well behaved. I felt as though my teachers all thought the same way. Then one day my homeroom teacher called me stupid for missing a homework assignment. To be called out in front of the class like that was horrifying. Though that wasn’t the only time an incidence like that occurred. In the 9th grade I struggled with math. I did poorly on tests, I already lacked confidence in the subject and it took one day with a substitute teacher to shatter it completely. I will never forget the words she said to me â€Å"Why can’t you finish the test? Are you stupid? † As child of any age, those words are damaging to the way you feel about yourself, and the way you think others perceive you. â€Å"Tell a child he’s stupid enough times and eventually hell start believing you, claims Benj Vardigan, with the Behavioral Institute. When a child makes mistakes or doesn’t understand a concept, his knee-jerk reaction may be to conclude that he’s stupid. Take that one step further and watch a child stop trying to understand or stop trying to learn a concept because he automatically assumes he can’t figure it out. † (Hatter) In A Class Divided on of the first examples of looking glass self that I picked up on was when the children came back in from recess after fighting. Mrs. Elliot asks â€Å"What’s wrong with being called brown eyes? † and a little  boy, Roy, says â€Å"It means we’re stupider and – well, not that†¦Ã¢â‚¬ It’s immediate how the effect of this experiment took hold. These children took to heart what their teacher, Mrs. Elliot had said, that brown eyed children are less than blue eyed children, they aren’t as smart or as well behaved. In the first day of the lesson the effects on their peers perception of them had caused so much turmoil that it caused one child to hit another, clearly the negative aspect of looking glass. In the Teaching Adults section, Mrs. Elliott describes how she gave tests before during and after the lesson on discrimination. Telling the audience that the student test scores raise on the day they are on top, scores drop when they are on the bottom and after the experiment the children’s testing scores maintain a higher level. She attributed this to the children discovering how good they are. I believe instilling a positive self-imagine in a child is one of the most important things a parent, or teacher can do. â€Å"Whether self-concept is positive or negative can influence important areas of a childs development and achievement. Educators have recognized that there is a link between self-concept and performance in school. Students with a strong self-concept tend to have good grades and take an active role in school. They are able to accept challenges and enjoy new learning experiences. Students with a negative self-concept tend to have both attitude and behavior problems. They may be unwilling to try new things, because they believe they will fail anyway, or they may not work up to their potential. Some educators feel that a positive self-concept is so important that children need to be taught to like themselves before they are taught academic skills such as reading, writing, and mathematics. † (Myers-Walls and Hinkley)

Homoeroticism in the novel Between Men by Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick :: literature gothic fiction homosexual gay

"Homoeroticism in The Monk and Christabel" The Monk In Between Men Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick presents an idea of the "Male homosocial continuum", which is outlined on our poster. In analysing the relationship between Ambrosio and Rosario, it is evident that the two share a "social bond"; yet whether or not this bond is evidence of desire is uncertain. Kosofsky Sedgwick also describes points of 'radical disruption', which in The Monk appear to result from the heterosexist framework to which we are introduced on the very first page, through Lewis' statement: "The Men came to see the Women". The homosocial relationship between Ambrosio and Rosario is disrupted by "the ambient heterosexist culture" (Kosofsky Sedgwick Epistemology of the Closet 46) that is physically manifested in Matilda. Ambiguity remains, however, concerning the author's intent. Lewis initiates a homosocial bond between Ambrosio and Rosario; he easily could have circumvented any notion of homoeroticism in the novel. He chose not to, but then chose to 'heterosexualise' the novel through revealing Rosario to be a woman. We would like to raise the question -- why did Lewis portray Ambrosio and Rosario in this way? The historical context for "Christabel" - its production, reception, and how that relates to homosexual or ambiguous sexuality. This poem, (composed in 1798 and published in 1816), sparked 7 verse parodies and 15 continuations in the years before 1909. What the parodies do to the figure of Geraldine is of particular interest. There are many answers to who and what she is. Some, following the conventions of Gothic romance suggest a "fairy tale" resolution which re-establishes the hetero-sexual order (Christabel marries her far away lover) and the supernatural and mysterious Geraldine is expelled. In 1819 David Moir wrote "Christabel, Part Third". In this, he uses the mundane to decrease the Gothic elements, but he increases the sexual content. For him, however, Geraldine turns out to be a man, and impregnates Christabel. Many of the interpretations of the relationship between Geraldine and Christabel work to remove any mystery or ambiguity. The anonymous poem Christabess, from 1816, increases the amount of sexual content in the poem, but this version subverts the expected heterosexual encounter and leaves Geraldine a woman. There however, is still ambiguity as to their relationship. There are quotes from the parodies and Coleridge himself on the poster which reveal the uncertainty of the relationship between the women and the conflicting interpretations of the writers.
